I'm still here. And I haven't forgotten the results of our game, just haven't gotten time to get it all fixed up. :P

Thanks for all the text messages yesterday! :D To answer Jessica's question, I was observing the route to make it so when I manifest it, I can be more efficient. We've all been taking turns going.

Let's see. My room's a mess, and it's beginning to drive me crazy because I haven't gotten a chance this week yet to work on it. I have clean sheets on my bed though, so that's a start. I'm also resolved to put away clean clothes tonight that have been accumulating on my desk chair. :P

I babysat tonight; sweet, well disciplined boys...that are definitely boys. I got to help out with their homework, and accomplished much with one that has been struggling. It was delightful when their Mom got home to find how much of an encouragement what we got done was (I'm sure that sentence is improper. It's a good thing I was helping with math and not English. ;)

My leg just went to sleep.

I'm going to have some espresso in my china demitasse cup. It has violets on it.

I feel strange writing the article for our company because I've not been trained to, or haven't really studied writing.

My other leg is asleep too. I think I'd better change positions. Kind of weird, sitting cross legged doesn't usually do this to me.

While the coffee's brewing, does anyone know much about ADHD in young children? Suggestions for helping them focus? And alternatives to medications?

Fred has discovered PG Wodehouse. It delights his 13 year old mind. Silliness runs in the family you know. ;) We have the movies in addition to the book, and as I walked through the living room, I nearly choked on my coffee as I heard someone ask Wooster, "What's an emissary?" and Wooster's reply, "Oh well, it's something you send." [Bryan, don't go using this as a reason not to drink coffee either. I know what you're thinking.]

I can't believe the difference just one day makes. Working five days a week instead of four seems like so much more than one extra day. :P What happened to free time??

My coffee's gone, I'd best finish up making my bed, put away my clean clothes, and totter off to dream land. Early morning tomorrow and all that.

Here's some George MacDonald to finish off with:

The worst power of an evil mood is this--
It makes the bastard self seem in the right,
Self, self the end, the goal of human bliss.
But if the Christ-self in us be the might
Of saving God, why should I spend my force
With a dark thing to reason of the light--
Not push it rough aside, and hold obedient course?

I discovered PG Wodehouse this past summer. I can't believe it took me this long. Good choice, Fred!

There's actually a significant number of psychologists who don't believe there really is such a thing as ADHD, per se. David Keirsey is a famous example, although for a best selling author he has kind of a crappy website: http://keirsey.com/kidsandschool.html

Of course, it ultimately comes down to learning self-discipline. In our modern times, we want any excuse to avoid it. It's true that some people are biologically inclined towards certain bad behavior, and in some cases it can be so extreme that medication might be necisary. However, I think in most cases, just some good old fasion discipline (either from someone in charge, or in the case of an adult with ADHD, developing self-discipline)

One of the reasons Dr. Keirsey is so strongly against the ADHD phenonemon is that a lot of so called "Attention deficit disorder" has more to do with varying personality types than it has to do with someone having psychological problems. Doing a search on ADD/ADHD I found this self test:
http://www.thehealthcenter.info/selftest.php?id=7

A lot of those categories fit me. And perhaps even most people. (Don't we all sometimes say things without thinking?) I'm sure as a child if I was ever tested, I would have been definitely considered ADHD. In fact, as I understand it, a lot of people with my "Myers-Briggs" personality type (ENFP) would be. But we learn to have self-discipline and take what could be a harmful thing and turn it into something good. I think a lot of times there are parents with children with very different personalities from their own, and because of this, they're not sure how to raise them, and perhaps assume that there's something psychologically wrong with them, especially if their bad behavior seems connected with their type of personality.

As far as some pointers from one scatter-brained person on how to help someone be more self-disciplined, things I'll sometimes do is make myself lists that I have to check off. Or keep mental notes in my head about things to do or not do. Sometimes I'll have the urge to say something when I shouldn't, so I just always remember to remind myself not to do that sort of thing. :-) A lot of it comes down to humility and remembering that you're not perfect and that just because something seems "natural" for you to want to do, doesn't make it right. :-)

Anyway, hope this helps. It's kind of a messy ramble, and I'll admit, I haven't studied ADD/ADHD much so I'm no expert.

I know a bit about ADD and ADHD. I have mixed feelings on it as I believe it is completely over diagnosed and in some cases some good discipline is all the children actually need.

As for alternatives to medicine - the children need a strict routine with lots of breaks allocated and a lot of time to do some physical activity. Diet is essential. You have ot stay away from most highly processed foods and focus on things like whole grains, steamed veggies and water. Anything with food colouring or high starch and sugar levels is a no no. It is hard work but then it is probably a lot better than a class A narcotic.

Oh and there are HUNDREDS of sites on the net about the condition. Google is our friend!

Oh yeah, I forgot that Bryan hates coffee and you love it. Hehe! The same is true of Andrew and me too.

I rarely drank coffee till I met Guy. He has to have coffee in the morning to wake up and now I need one cup (one cup only!) to get awake.

As for ADD/ADHD, I think it's entirely "diagnosed" too often. A lot of it stems from teachers not wanting to deal with bouncy, energetic boy personalities - and the fact that elementary schools have started eliminating recess. GRRRRR ('nother reason to think about homeschooling). The thing that works with dogs works with kids: tired kids are calm kids. Calm kids can pay better attention to what they're hearing and reading. T.v. and video games don't help much, either, because they lower the attention span.

Ask Ruth about her student, Jimmy. There's a success story for you!

See, the funny thing with me and coffee, I don't have to have it, I just enjoy it a lot.

Gosh, Holly. I don't know what else you could be doing. It's not like you've had anything exciting happening in your life.

;)
